White Cap 5
14 boats came out for White Cap 5 and the first opportunity to use the new mark on the way to Indian Point to keep boats at a proper distance from the ferry dock. It worked! Rush and Dorado were OCS, and Rush restarted. The last boat to finish was Second Wind. Norma Mae and Vixen have been given provisional ratings of 150 and are now in the handicapped results. After the last race, John Bailey informed that Pinger’s rating had been changed from 166 to 165 and that change is now reflected in results for this series. […]

PT High School Sailing Team Update
A quick update on our sailing team from coach Erik Coburn. As always, your financial support helps make it possible. We went up to Doublehand District Champs with the high school team and had a good showing. Varsity got a 4th out of 12 and we displaced one of the perennial powerhouses by 27 points over 24 races. We were 10 points out of 3rd. The 1st place team was head and shoulders above everyone but we had the youngest team by far, with two sophs vs all seniors in the top 5 teams besides us. We had a weird [...]
White Cap 4
At least there was wind, for 15 participants sailing a 6+nm course! In addition to the rated boats, the 11th boat to cross the line was Vixen at 19:20:06 and 15th was Norma Mae at 19:22:03. Seems there may have been some contact between No Name and Sirocco at the start line. […]

Light Air Running
The last couple of race days have seen wind and rain during the day, but around the 6 PM start time the sun has come out and the breeze gone away. The lesson here may well be don't let 4 PM's weather scare you away from an evening sail. Having made it out, now how do you sail fast to the leeward mark in low pressure? The link below will pull up a PDF of Stewart Walker's interesting and thorough thoughts on that very question. Light Air Running by Stewart Walker, a PDF file

White Cap 2
13 boats came out for White Cap 2. In addition to the boats in rated results, Vixen placed 11th (19:32:55) and Second Wind placed 12th (19:40:38). The RC had a call from a very angry ferry pilot about boats sailing through his prop wash while he was docked. When running races from the dock, we can’t set many courses that stay away from the ferry dock. By law, boats should stay at least 500 feet from the ferry which is hard to determine, but sailing through his prop wash could endanger our permit to have races. The RC will be [...]

Spring Whitecap Series, Race #1
Race Night – Whitecap Number 1 Scoring submitted by Dave Burrows of the PTSA Race Committee. A day that saw steady rain and a cold wind had the inclement weather back off enough for some hardy souls to head out of their slips for race #1 of the PTSA Spring 2011 Whitecap Series. Watching them from the drier and warmer balcony of Sirens was a good representation of the less hardy crew who raised more than one glass in admiration. Wind that was forecast at 6 came in with greater pressure, taking the fleet from a NW Maritime Center shore [...]
