Thunderbird Dog Days Series -2019 – Races 8, 9, 10 and Final Standings.
For the finale of the Dog Days Series we persisted with course SWOLF and managed to run three races. The wind was NW 7 – 8 kts. with no sharp gusts. Steady for the first two races, it faded during the third race leaving the fleet parked before the leeward mark for a while, then slowly rebuilding enough for them to claw their way to the finish. This week we were visited by Murrelet and Jackoroe. They were offered, and accepted, a start after the Thunderbirds. They did not impede the ‘birds on the course. Murrelet finished ahead of Jackoroe. Ted Pike Memorial Regatta Results
This, the fourth memorial of Ted and his contributions to the North West sailing community, was probably the most successful so far. Especially in terms of number of participating boats (11 anchored in the kelp and one on the beach), enthusiasm around the rum keg which was over filled (Sparkle’s entry fee was accidentally donated to Davy Jones during disembarkation) and definitely in terms of cooperating breezes. Sparkle and Pacifica maintained their perfect attendance record. […]
Thunderbird August Dog Days Series 2019 – Races 6 & 7
This week we continued setting the course away from shore and using the offset mark. Course SWOLF was again about 2 nm. long. This week the wind was more than generous. For the start of the first race the wind was NW 9 – 12 kts. with occasional sharp gusts to 15+. For the start of the second race it had risen to 12 – 15 kts. with the gusts more frequent and longer. It held a steady direction but continued to rise, a gust of 20 kts was measured towards the end. The offer of a third start was [...]

Dungeness Bay Dinghy Regatta Sunday August 18th
Many of you may know of Leo Goolden a boatbuilder, sailor and writer from Bristol, England who is currently living in Sequim and is "on a mission to rebuild a 107-year old English sailing yacht called Tally Ho". If you haven't seen his YouTube videos they are well worth watching. Leo is sponsoring a casual small boat regatta/picnic this coming Sunday at Cline Spit, Dungeness Bay. All are welcome. It should be a blast.
Thunderbird August Dog Days Series 2019 – Races 4 & 5, Standings
This week we took advantage of a generous breeze, NW 7 – 9kts., to extend the very short courses of the last series. Also, as practice for the upcoming Thunderbird West Coast Regional Championships, an offset mark was set. Course SWOLF (~2nm.) was set in the bay, away from shore effects. Two races were completed. The wind began to die towards the end of the second race so a third race was not attempted. […]
PTSA Thunderbird August Dog Days Series 2019 – Races 1,2,3 & Standings
Due to the Race Committee’s failure to sync reality with the calendar and the published race schedule, an earlier version of this report erroneously referred to races 9, 10, 11 of the Cat’s Paw series. In fact last Wednesday’s races were #1, #2, & #3 of the Dog Days Series. Sorry for any confusion that was created in others. Once again a steady, moderate, NW breeze allowed for three races (plus a false start – just for practice). As a break from rounding the pin, course SILF (1.1 nm.) was set. The CB was positioned such that leg 1 was [...]
Bertram Levy’s Murrelet: The Wooden Boat Tradition is Alive and Well in Port Townsend
By Roland Nikles Port Townsend, Washington, is proud of its wooden boat tradition. At the twilight of the commercial sailing era it was a bustling seaport, strategically located at the entrance to Puget Sound. Shipyards, boatwrights, foundries, shipping agents, a majestic customs house on the hill, and a busy waterfront have left their mark. Today Port Townsend identifies as a Victorian sea-port and arts community. The wooden boat tradition has shifted from the utilitarian to the aesthetic. […]

July Cat’s Paw Series 2019 – Races 6, 7, 8. and Final Standings **CORRECTION**
Initially it was not noted that these races concluded the series. The opportunity was taken to upgrade the results table format to be readable on a cellphone. The actual results remain unchanged. Once again we found a solid steady wind and were able to set up a course and start on time. The course set was SIFIF – 1.2 nm. and the leaders were able to consistently complete the course in a little over 20 min. […]
