West Marine Donates New PTSA Race Mark
PTSA is proud to announce that West Marine of Port Townsend recently become a sponsor to our events, by donating all the ground tackle and buoy for the replacement of the missing mark "Y,"( which should be in by the summer series.) This is no small donation, as the cost of the replacement ground tackle exceeds $500.00. The Staff at the P.T. West Marine has been busy updating inventory, and if you have not been in lately be sure to check it out. They have added lots of new cordage, including Endura Braid, and Technora T900 that will be in soon. There is a [...]
Rob Sanderson Embarking for Ocean Dreams
Rob Sanderson, one of the hardest working anchors of the Northwest Maritime Center, will be heading out on Velella Velella in July for some continuing education’ on the open ocean. Here is how he describes his decision to embark on his dream: “Last winter I was visiting my father and he brought out a shoebox from the closet full of “art projects” from my childhood that I didn’t remember doing and didn’t realize that he had kept. It was after a fine dinner with some wine that I opened up that box and starting picking through the articles inside. [...]
White Cap 8 & Final
Is this why they call it White Cap? 14 boats came out for a rough finale to the spring series. In addition to the handicapped boats, Second Wind participated but did not finish. As Dave Burrows reports: “This turned out to be a rugged one. Wind at start NW 15+ kts, at 1830 20+ kts, at 1900 25+ kts, at 1930 (when picking up gear) 30+ kts. Soem boats were really struggling at the end of the first lap but Pegasus had already crossed so we did not shorten course. As the wind was still building from 25 kts when [...]
Just in Time
Spring is finally in the air, just in time for the last of the Spring Whitecap Series Races this Friday (May 20.) The weatherman promises sunshine and we intend to celebrate with the first D-Dock Party of the season after the race. Bring meat to roast and your favorite beverage. Stig will be there to videotape your racing sea stories and strategies, so bring those too.

The R-Boats Are Coming
We hope to have the R-boats in Port Townsend for this June’s Classic Mariners Regatta. R-Boat racing started on the West Coast in 1912 and was very active up until 1940. Most major Yacht clubs had at least one in their stall and they raced for the Seattle Lipton Cup, the Isherwood Trophy, and others, with Seattle Yacht Club’s R-Boat, Sir Tom, dominating the fleet for over 14 years. The fleet racing died on the West Coast after WWII and was not seen again until our own Wooden Boat Festival in 2010. There are now three completed, restored, [...]
505 Regatta: Small Fleet, Big Smiles!
The PTSA sponsored 2011 Port Townsend 5o5 Mother’s Day Regatta “Dooflicker” (Dunlap/Ginther) and “Eight Ball” (Coburn/Flanagan) chasing “Relish” (Brackett Bros.) The PTSA hosted 5o5 Port Townsend Mother’s Day Regatta took place last weekend, May 7th & 8th, without much fanfare or publicity, but for seven 5o5 teams it was good clean fun on the water and off — an event your mother could be proud of! Nine races over two days provided the international fleet with consistent 5 to 10 knot breeze and even some sun on Sunday. Saturday, “Opening Day” of the boating season was decidedly wet, but that [...]
White Cap 7
15 boats came out for a fine evening of windward leeward racing. Tarfon did not go through the start-finish line at the end 0f the first lap so was DSQ. In addition to the usual suspects, True North joined in for the first time. We don’t have a rating for them, but they came in 15th at 19:54:51. A special thanks to Pete Langley for supplying and driving Nordso for Committee Boat. […]
Spring Wooden Boat Series Races 1&2
Opening Day was difficult time for boating. The “parade” was thin and the crowds observing were thinner. The later boats sailing into PT from Seattle faced a building flood and dying wind, and were often seen sailing backwards. The Wooden Boat Fleet, got off to good start but found little wind near the tower and diminished wind for the return to finish. It’s been good to see Cubana out again. Also participating in both races, without a rating, has been Second Wind. They were 6th in the first race at 13:53:08 and 6th in the second race at 15:38:49. There [...]
White Cap 6
8 regular participants and 2 505’s came out for cool, breezy, and somewhat “humid” evening of racing. In addition to the handicapped boats, Second Wind again participated crossing the line 8th at 19:13:40. Four boats that have not participated in this series have been removed from the results, which will change some numbers but not any placements. […]
Sailing Team Scores at Team Race District Regatta
Another report from Coach Erik Coburn. The final district qualifier will be May 28th and 29th in Port Townsend. The High School Sailing Team put forth another good effort at Team Race District Qualifiers finishing 4th out of 7 varsity teams. We did not field a JV team. The event, sailed on Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island, was conducted under sunny skies and light 5 – 8 knots of breeze this past Saturday and Sunday. As the first day’s round robin concluded the team went 3-3 which included an upset of Orcas Island. The next day the team went 4-2 [...]
SO MANY RACES, SO LITTLE TIME
If Ed’s Wednesday Night races and PTSA’s Friday night races are not enough for you, there is more racing to be had just around the corner at Port Ludlow. The Port Ludlow Yacht Club sponsors an Etchells fleet that sails most Thursdays from April to October at noon and it holds PHRF races every 1-2 weeks at mid-day Saturdays. It’s a friendly group and they frequently need crew members. If you are interested in racing with them, contact Jim Brannaman at 437-9241 for the PHRF races and Dan Darrow at desdarrow@olypen.com for the Etchells racing. Jim Brannaman needs crew for [...]
