PT Sailing Team Season Ends on High Note

By |June 30th, 2010|Categories: PTHS Sailing Team|Tags: |

The Port Townsend High School Sailing Team just celebrated the end of the season with a BBQ and awards ceremony at Fort Townsend State Park.  It was a great season with PT continuing to make strides in the district.  We basically were finishing in the middle of the fleet very solidly all season long.  We also had many great races by each competitor from our youngest to our veterans.  This bodes very well, since we had only one senior, Team Captain Jackson Delagarza, and one junior, Team Captain Cooper Parish.  The rest of the team is very young [...]

PT Invitational 2010

By |June 27th, 2010|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

4 out of town boats and 6 local boats participated in the first annual Port Townsend Invitational. The first race was a short windward/leeward in a light and variable NE wind.  There were many holes and few were left unused.  The second and third races were moved toward Admiralty inlet where it was found that the NNW wind allowed nice, long windward/leeward races between the #2 bouy and the tower.  All participating boats finished all races with the second and third being the most fun with the added challenge of a strong flood. Of the three Etchells participating, Oden and [...]

Cat’s Paw 2010: Races 3 and 4

By |June 25th, 2010|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

This evening was the first two race evening and went off well with 13 boats in the first race and 9 boats in the second.  There was a steady breeze for a windward/leeward course between Indian Point and a race mark short of the tower.  How these additional races are to be scored is still being debated. What’s not being debated is that in the first race of the series I calculated the distance incorrectly (thanks, Marilyn for catching it).  In the second race of the series, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place boats got shuffled in the results.  So, hat [...]

Revision to Sailing Instructions Gives RC Multi-Start Option

By |June 23rd, 2010|Categories: Club News, Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

There's been an important change to the 2010 Sailing Instructions. If there's time and wind to run a two lap race, the Race Committee now has a choice whether to run two, one lap races (which gives us two starts), or one, two lap race. A number that comes before anything else on the course board tells you if two races are are being run. A number after the course tells you if there is more than one lap. There is the possibility that the second race may not use the same course so check the board before [...]

Cats Paw 2010, Race 2

By |June 21st, 2010|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

15 boats came out for a beautiful evenings racing in Race 2.  Most boats were over early for the first start and were recalled with difficulty.  Please remember that a single horn just after the start indicates an individual recall and two horns indicate a general recall. Three boats– Tzieu,  Coco Solo and Eclipse–did not cross the S/F line on the first lap.  This can be confusing since in some races we prohibit crossing the line unless starting or finishing, BUT in series races if a course is twice around you MUST cross through the S/F line at the end [...]

More information on the PT Invitational Regatta

By |June 19th, 2010|Categories: Club News, Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

Invitational means You’re invited Some people asked how they could be invited after seeing the poster. Invitational means we are inviting sailors from other local yacht clubs to attend as well as local PT sailors. The name stems from a desire to share our particular location and style of racing with boats from other areas. If this idea grows, we will grow the event in future years. This year we will have some boats from Sequim and Port Ludlow. Please be on our best, most hospitable behavior! Registration Registration will be at the Skipper’s meeting. There is no [...]

Port Ludlow YC Tala Pt Regatta this Saturday the 19th

By |June 14th, 2010|Categories: Racing out of the Bay|Tags: |

This Saturday on June 19th, the Port Ludlow Yacht Club Tala Pt Regatta will be feature two races. Boats (and owners) that like longer race legs will be please with the course and you get to see some different real estate.  For more information go to their web site at PLYC. Speaking of Port Ludlow, don't forget the Port-to-Port Race August 14-15.  In addition, the rumor is that one of the PLYC's best races is the 20 mile Satchet Head race, August 28 but then again, they have two days of racing September 18-19 for the Marrowstone Island races.  If [...]

Swift? Surely not!

[slideshow id=20] Pegasus fighting for a spot on the line Pegasus XIV does the 2010 Swiftsure race The 2010 Swiftsure was many things this year but fast wasn’t one of them.  It had a few moments of excitement but the word was “Well, it’s never like this…”  Swiftsure normally starts with an upwind leg, the price you pay to have a good, solid downwind finish. Oh that it were so this year. On the other hand, we can’t say we weren’t warned. Our weather briefing Friday started with “It looks like great wind at the start with this high offshore [...]

Classic Mariners Regatta Results

By |June 12th, 2010|Categories: Racing on the Bay, Wood boats|Tags: |

Three cheers for Kathy and the folks who put on the 27th annual Wooden Boat Foundation & Northwest Maritime Center 2010 Classic Mariners Regatta. Two great days of racing that started with light wind that built in the afternoon. Two rockin’ parties – the Friday reception and the Saturday dinner and dance (with 123 dinners sold) – and a rowing race. And we can state from experience that being rolled by a schooner flying every sail and bed sheet on board may not be fast, but it is pretty spectacular. Thanks to Elizabeth Becker and Michael Berman (more [...]

Cat’s Paw Series, Race 1

By |June 11th, 2010|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

Cat’s Paw Series 2010 Race 1 14 boats came out for the first race of the summer series.  A windward / leeward course was used in a NW wind between 14 and 18 knots. 4 new boats came out: Mwal, Norma Mae (Catalina 36), Salmon, and Windsong.  We don’t have a rating for any of these boats although Norma Mae was the only boat to finish as the other three did not know to go through the start-finish line on each lap.  Also disqualified was Pacemaker for colliding with the committee boat before finishing, not that hitting the committee boat is [...]

A New Open 40 Gets Hatched

By |June 7th, 2010|Categories: In the Yard|Tags: |

Dan Newland helps finish a new Open 40. For 5 weeks this spring I was in the Bay area working on the build of a new Open Class 40, “Condor” or more properly “California Condor.” I was originally going to be there for 1-2 weeks to design and build some of the detailed finish composite work but they liked what I was doing and they were far behind schedule so I was invited to stay as long as I could. After 5 weeks of 7 days a week and 10-12 hours a day, (300+ hours in 5 weeks [...]
