Classic DORADE Likely to Win Overall Transpac Title
More Dorade videos on YouTube. It’s not over yet, but due to this atypical weather pattern the S&S 52-foot wood yawl Dorade will likely win the race overall in corrected time, a repeat of her victory in 1936. Impeccably renovated and maintained, her victory may be aesthetically pleasing for the classic boat crowd but will not be a fluke: with a pro-level crew and weeks of sail testing and training, her achievement is the result of having all the right elements of preparation, execution and luck with weather come together. Second Set of Nereida Slides
The chase boat first made contact with Jeanne about 11pm off of Race Rocks. She had about 7.5 NM to go to the line. There were light variable winds of about 3 to 7 knots and the flood was just ending. It took until about 2:30 am to reach the line at the breakwater. After crossing the line, we took her in tow to the inner harbor and arrived at about 3:00. Ian Grant from the Ocean Cruising Club and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club was acting as official timer as Tony Gooch was away sailing to Europe. The [...]

Hooligan Navy
This 47-minute documentary originally aired as part of the "Sea Tales" series on A&E. It tells a little-known story about a band of young yachtsmen and fishermen who were recruited during World War II to help protect the United States' East coast from Hitler's deadly fleet of Nazi U-Boats. The sailors were sent out to find and confront the U-Boats equipped only with antique machine guns mounted on wooden recreational sailboats that were put into service so quickly the grey paint was still wet when they left the docks. PT Nationals Bound. Needs to Raise Funds ASAP!
Our kids have done a great job this years. Now it's our turn to step up. Sorry I have been behind on regatta reports, it's been crunch time! By virtue of great sailing and pure grit by the kids in what came down to a total nail biter regatta, Port Townsend has qualified for Nationals. We won by a mere 2 points over 32 races. The regatta was not decided until the final race (between Bainbridge and ourselves). Long story short, we are heading to Chicago Yacht Club in less than two weeks to compete with the best of the [...]

Providing GPS Data to DSC VHF Radios
The DSC (Digital Selective Calling) "panic button" is one of the more important safety innovations in the last few years. Pressing the button for 5 seconds will send an automated mayday call to all nearby DSC radios. The mayday message will sound an alarm on other boat's radio and then show the position of the distressed vessel. The mayday message will also interrupt any conversations occurring on any receiving radios. The Coast Guard automatically sees and records the message. The fact that the GPS coordinates do not have to be relayed over voice is quite an innovation. There [...]
Cold Water Shock and Drowning
Dr. Kent Benedict gave a talk on cold water shock and drowning at a recent U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea seminar in the Bay Area. Like many of the talks at the seminar, the topic was presented in light of the tragic race drownings in California last year. Dr. Benedict related that all of the Low Speed Chase deaths at the Farallone Islands were caused by drowning, not by trauma or hypothermia. This drowning was probably initiated by cold water shock. When suddenly submerged in cold water, the body will start an uncontrollable gasping reflex for 10 to 30 [...]

Call to Action
Call To Action This is an urgent message from the Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW). Please email your Legislators now asking them to restore the Recreation Resource Account in the Capital Budget to its dedicated $9.7M level. The process to send emails is easy and just takes a minute. Please click on the link below to log in and send a message to your Legislators. [...]
Sailing Team Wins Silverdale Team Racing Regatta
PT High School Sailing Team at the Silverdale team racing regatta. Photo by Erik Coburn Saturday March 23rd the Port Townsend High School Sailing Team (PTHSST) traveled to mostly sunny Silverdale to a 17 team 2 boats vs 2 boats event. Light winds out of the south were adequate almost all the time and quite favorable most of the time for this format of racing, allowing a total of 61 races to be run. The course was the standard “Digital N” used for team racing in high school and college. Team racing “Digital N” course Races [...]

Cajones in the canyons. Full screen please. This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. Kelly Slater described the day by saying "witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people's lives all day long, it's [...]
PT Sailing Team Sails To Victory in Seattle
Cody Kowalski and McKenzie Ginther putting the hurt on the fleet with a decisive bullet (the rest of the fleet is out of the picture!). Photo by Erik Coburn High school sailing has grown so much that the Northwest District (www.nwisa.org) may be splitting in to two regions. While the PT team has gotten a lot better, the whole district has as well, making every regatta a nail biter for the team. At a South Region Regatta March 9th in Silverdale, PT qualified one team for the Gold fleet and one for the Silver fleet. A similar regatta [...]

Port Townsend Youth Regatta August 6th and 7th
from Erik Coburn Looking forward to seeing you all this upcoming weekend. If anyone is in need of a place to put down a tent let me know because we should be able to accomodate you. We have been having nice wind all summer and I’m guessing by the law of averages it should be sunny and warm this weekend! Our goal this year is to provide an event with as many fair races as possible at the smallest fee possible. Consider this the Recession Special. During our high school event we got off 19 races. Obviously our courses will [...]
Sailing Team Ends Season at PT Regatta
70 high school sailors gathered at the Northwest Maritime Center to wrap up the season under surprisingly sunny skies Saturday and Sunday. The wind cooperated as well – at least on Saturday, allowing the Race Committee to bang off 18 races on Saturday over the course of about 7 hours. Sunday was to be less windy so the R/C, made up of three generations of the Daubenberger family made the best of Saturday. As it turned out, this was a good thing to do as only 2 races would be completed on Sunday. Out of 17 teams, Port [...]
PT High School Sailing Team Update
A quick update on our sailing team from coach Erik Coburn. As always, your financial support helps make it possible. We went up to Doublehand District Champs with the high school team and had a good showing. Varsity got a 4th out of 12 and we displaced one of the perennial powerhouses by 27 points over 24 races. We were 10 points out of 3rd. The 1st place team was head and shoulders above everyone but we had the youngest team by far, with two sophs vs all seniors in the top 5 teams besides us. We had a weird [...]
Sugar and Spencer Win Bellingham Bay One Design Regatta with Three Bullets!
Team Port Townsend 505 represented well September 18th and 19th at the Dale Jepsen Bellingham Bay One Design Regatta hosted by the Bellingham Yacht Club. Port Townsend 505 sailors Sugar Flanagan, Spencer Snap, Sean Rankins, Charlie Dore and Erik Coburn (who drove for Whidbey Island’s Paul Von Grey) made up the team. It was a fine event which was comprised of many Lasers (sailing their District Champs), Flying Scots, A-Cats, Tasars and 505s sailing on two courses. Though the forecast called for rain both days, Saturday was warm and sunny with a light-but-steady four to six knot breeze. [...]
Port Townsend Youth Racers Sail Well at First Annual PT Youth Regatta
34 Youth Sailors took to the tricky waters of Port Townsend Bay this past weekend July 17th and 18th. The competitors ranged in age from 9 to 17, and were either in Optis, Laser (Full Rig and Radial) or Vanguard 15s. The is the first time that Port Townsend has hosted a non-high school youth regatta. Port Townsend was recruited to be a regular venue on the NW Youth Circuit all signs point to higher participation next year. Visiting families all commented on how sweet sailing out of the NWMC in PT was. Thanks to nice weather, good [...]
Dick Rose Racing Rules Seminar Tonight!
Don't miss out on this great opportunity to learn the rules from a master, and for a great cause. Lecture begins at 6pm tonight at the Northwest Maritime Center. (See post below for more details)
Racing Seminar Presented to Full House at the Northwest Maritime Center
The title "Racing on the Bay: the Insiders Advantage" drew over one hundred sailboat skippers and crew wanting to learn the secrets of sailboat racing on Port Townsend Bay. Lifetime Port Townsend sailors Daubie Daubenberger and Joe Daubenberger shared their expert knowledge gathered from decades of sailing and racing, with additional input from ace sailors Piper Dunlap and Stig Osterberg. All speakers agreed that to be competitive it is essential to do basic boat preparation, crew practice in tacking, jibing and all assorted maneuvers. Daubie presented and elaborated on three racing principles: Technique, Tactics and Strategy. Piper complemented this [...]
