The Sequim Hospice Regatta is actually on September 12th, not the 19th. Changing our calendar to reflect that allowed the start date of the PTSA Fall Nitecap series to be moved up to Sunday, September 20th from the 27th. So..... Sequim Hospice Regatta - September 12th. First PTSA 2015 Fall Nitecap race - September 20th. and, remember... Thunderbird Northwest Regional Regatta – Sept 5th and 6th 2015 The Thunderbird regionals will once again be held on Port Townsend Bay.  We can look forward to two days of exciting racing and a tasty dinner at the Pope Marine building at 6pm [...]

Ted Pike The first many reminiscence on the life of longtime PTSA member, wooden boat lover, and friend to all who had the good fortune of knowing him, Ted Pike. The following was posted by Kiwi Ferris on the Edensaw Facebook page. Dog Days Series – Races 2 & 3

By |August 22nd, 2015|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

The Dog Days races appear  well named. RACE 2 (08/14/15) The weather forecast was for NW winds at 10 kts. and possible showers.  The RC arrived at the boat haven to find steady moderate rain, Easterly winds gusting to 1 kt.  and reducing visibility. There was also an absence of sailors so race 2 was abandoned. Race 3 (08/21/15) The forecast was for light SE winds.  The actual at the dock was Northerly at 2+ kts. with gusts to 3 and lulls below 1 .  The water surface showed widely spaced light patches, particularly in the inner bay, smoke at [...]

Dog Days Series 2015 – Race 1

By |August 9th, 2015|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

The Dog Days Series got off to a great start, a beautiful evening with wind to spare that persisted. With the wind Northwest 10 – 12 kts and building, gusts to 20, the course SMBMF, 4.9 nm. was an excellent choice in spite of the ~1 kt flood and light chop. Five boats came out to enjoy the fine sailing. The finish order was: Sparkle                  Guy Hupy & Brian McGinn Blew Bird               Piper Dunlap & Dan Ginther Thatuna                 John Lynes Coco Solo              John Carey Noname                 Doug Bolling

By |August 4th, 2015|Categories: Racing Skills|

In this podcast the presenter reviews laylines, ladder rungs, and the danger of getting too close to the edge of the course.   Additionally, it shows just how much a lead can change when there is a big wind shift, and it talks about the danger of trying to build "leverage" against the fleet.   This is one of over thirty racing video podcasts from Raceqs.com.  In this and other podcasts you will see graphical representations of actual races which were recorded using Raceq's free iPhone or Android apps.  Several racers in the PTSA fleet have been using this app to [...]

Summer Cat’s-paw Series, 2015. Race 7 and Final Standings

By |August 1st, 2015|Categories: Racing on the Bay|Tags: |

Race seven was run because Aoelus and Njord conspired against us in races three and four, but this week instead of compensating our persistence they served up a third strike. Before the start the wind at the dock was 5 – 6 kts. with occasional gusts to 10+, fairly steadily from 280 ºM. Observation of the sea surface did not show any sign of soft spots.  Marks Y and G were well aligned for windward/leeward legs so the course was set for SADYGYDF, 5.3 nm. The intent of mark A in this instance was to prevent boats bunching at the [...]
