The results of the first race of the 2023 Nightcap series will not be included in the series score because (a) the start was delayed by two hours and many of the potential competitors returned to harbor, and (b) the race that was finally run did not follow the SI’s. There was only one start and the Thunderbirds raced PHRF.
When the CB left the BH there was little wind in the bay but indications of good wind towards Admiralty Inlet. Mark B was selected as the PHRF windward mark and W for the Thunderbirds was set 1/4 mi to leeward of B. The pin was set about 1/2 mi to leeward of that, but in the process its line fouled the CB propeller so tightly that the shaft could not be turned.
Race Manager Jeff Brantly risked hypothermia and leapt to the rescue with no wet-suit or goggles. It took him five trips under the boat to cut the line away from the prop, and he saved the anchor. We owe him!
This operation took about an hour and a half and during that time the wind filled the bay from the usual NW and strengthened. The RC set a line between Y and T and at 15:05 sent the remaining boats twice around.

I want to give a big shout out and thank you to the Race Committee for the fine work they’ve done through the years, especially at this race. And of course, we need to buy Jeff a bottle of his favorite drink.
It was a beautiful day for a sail. I know that a at least two boats, Andiamo Again and Salsa, retired early because they had crew from Whidbey Island, and we had received news that the last ferry for the day was to leave at 5:15.
