By Marty McOmber on July 28, 2015 in Three Sheets NW The U.S. Coast Guard helped rescue six people, including four children, from a 32-foot recreational boat off Point Wilson yesterday afternoon. No one was hurt in the incident. The vessel Kloshi Bay reported a fire aboard around 4:20 p.m. Coast Guard and local fire departments responded, helping put out the blaze while transferring the four children to safety. Summer Cat’s-paw Series 2015 – Race 6
After the early morning drizzle had waned the wind settled in steadily and firmly from the South. Readings taken from the bluff above the Mill, the Boat Haven, the beach at Pt Hudson and the City Dock around 4:30 consistently showed 7 – 9 kts. from 100ºM ±20º. A suitable course was set. Then without warning at 5 pm the wind instantly switched to 300ºM±20º and strengthened with gusts to 14+ kts. As race time and the postponement for the arriving ferry approached, the wind shifted to 280ºM±10º, stayed there and continued to build as we waited for the start. [...]

Flow Control of the Kite
A post from Mike Ingham in Sailing World In run mode, wind flows vertically in the spinnaker, entering near the head and exiting from the foot. Photo by Paul Todd/Outside Images. In the previous issue we visited Cornell University’s wind tunnel to see how wind flows around an asymmetric spinnaker. We learned a lot, of course, especially the importance of being dynamic with our trim, so we went back to the tunnel to explore some key points of symmetric spinnaker flow and trim. Before stepping into the tunnel, I had a naïve vision of attached flow on both [...]
Summer Cat’s-paw Series 2015 – Race 5
This may have been the most successful and enjoyable race of this series. Fifteen boats came out for a warm summer’s evening with generally moderate and steady breezes. Before the start, at the dock, the wind was 9 – 10 kts. from 270º M ± 20º making T-Y a reasonable upwind leg. An earlier visit to the beach at Pt Hudson showed the wind in the Inlet to be stronger and more northerly, making much of M – T a good downwind leg so with some trepidation the course was set as SAMTYDF for 7.3 nm., probably our longest course [...]
Thunderbird Northwest Regional Regatta – Sept 5th and 6th, 2015
The Thunderbird regionals will once again be held on Port Townsend Bay. We can look forward to two days of exciting racing and a tasty awards dinner. This fun event will provide the opportunity for us in Port Townsend to meet some new TBird sailors and test our skills against boats from other parts of the northwest. See the notice of race below for details. 2015 Thunderbird Regionals Notice of Race
The Really Big One
"An earthquake will destroy a sizable portion of the coastal Northwest. The question is when." A thought provoking article from the New Yorker on the Cascadia subduction zone and the consequences when it finally, and according to the article inevitably, moves again. The next full-margin rupture of the Cascadia subduction zone will spell the worst natural disaster in the history of the continent. When the 2011 earthquake and tsunami struck Tohoku, Japan, Chris Goldfinger was two hundred miles away, in the city of Kashiwa, at an international meeting on seismology. As the shaking started, everyone in the room [...]
MARTHA Gearing up for Monday Transpac Start
Ted Pike made the journey from Port Townsend to visit and sail on MARTHA, It’s good to see friends from Port Townsend. Edensaw Woods has been a strong supporter of our endeavors at the Schooner Martha Foundation and we thank them for their support. MARTHA is preparing for a San Francisco departure and the crew have all gathered for a Friday evening dinner at the Saint Francis Yacht Club. Special thanks to the Saint Francis for hosting MARTHA the week before our departure for Longbeach. We find it an interesting fact that as MARTHA and crew prepare, we [...]
Summer Cats-paw Series – 2015, Race 4
Like last week, at race time, wind conditions were good all over the bay. Also like last week the conditions soon became challenging and, in spite of valiant efforts and a shortened course, the time limit won. Except for one boat that managed to round the pin with just three minutes to spare. Before the race the wind at the dock was 4 – 6 kts. steadily from 280° M, which made I/T a good windward/leeward leg, so the course was set for SADITIDF (4.7 nm.). Having learned a lesson last week, after three long horn blasts arrangements were announced [...]
The NW Maritime Center Navigator Brunch
The Northwest Maritime Center is one of the key partners of the Port Townsend Sailing Association. The Maritime Center promotes racing on the Bay, and now with R2AK out of the Bay racing as well. Without their facilities the parties, seminars, and skippers meetings of the PTSA wouldn't be the same. The Navigator Brunch The Navigator Brunch is a yearly fundraiser that spotlights a particular aspect of the programming at the Northwest Maritime Center. Each year it focuses on a different theme and invites supporters and folks curious about the NWMC mission to join together for brunch and a brief presentation. July 18, [...]

Summer Cat’s-paw – 2015, Race 3
This race started out with great promise. Ten boats turned out even though it was a holiday weekend. The wind had been building during the afternoon and as race time approached, on the dock, it measured 5 – 8 kts. with occasional stronger gusts. The wind direction was 350º M which made MT a perfect windward/leeward course. The wind outside the bay appeared stronger than inside and the current ½ mile east of Pt Hudson at 19:00 was only a ¼ kt. ebb, so course SMTBF was set. The return to B rather than M was in consideration of the [...]
