Like last week, at race time, wind conditions were good all over the bay.  Also like last week the conditions soon became challenging and, in spite of valiant efforts and a shortened course, the time limit won.  Except for one boat that managed to round the pin with just three minutes to spare.

Before the race the wind at the dock was 4 – 6 kts. steadily from 280° M, which made I/T a good windward/leeward leg, so the course was set for SADITIDF (4.7 nm.).  Having learned a lesson last week, after three long horn blasts arrangements were announced on VHF68 for shortening the course if necessary.

During the postponement while waiting for the ferry to leave the wind continued to build a little and after the starts the boats made good speed towards I.  When next visible from the dock they were strung out, spinnakers up going dead downwind.  (Even the boat experimenting with reversing the head and the clew was doing well).

Then it all began to fall apart.  Even though the wind at the dock was unchanged the fleet was moving more and more slowly until they were all bunched together in a hole near the tower.  The horn was sounded, the S flag unfurled and the announcement made on VHF for the fleets to round the tower then return to the finish.  This shortened the course by a mile and, based on the wind at the dock could be made on one tack.

However, it took a long while for the fleet to claw their way around the tower, then they were faced with the unusual situation of bands of wind from alternating directions, interspersed with calms.  Sparkle was observed sailing straight from the tower for the dock, tacking several times but never changing her heading until she found the real wind about ¼ mile out.
Due to the unsatisfying nature of the past two races we should plan on using the make-up race #7 on July 31st.  Also, to avoid the postponement for the ferry departure when going to I or Y we are investigating making the nominal start time 6:15 instead of 6:30. The alert signal would be given when the ferry returning from Keystone approaches City Dock.

Apologies for late report,  three days and some anxiety fixing non-booting computer.
