Race five by the calendar but only the second for which we gained results. Once again it was a warm sunny afternoon but this time we had useful wind even if it was a little frolicsome. Ten boats came out, including two who are new to our fleet, all finished the fairly short course in less than an hour. Details and results after the break.
The wind at the dock was steady at about 5 kts. from the NW when the course was set to SDTDF but shifted to NE during the starting sequence. Out in the bay the wind appeared to strengthen and shift to a northerly, most boats returning from T to D could lay the mark on one tack. Approaching the finish the wind became light and shifty again. To complicate matters further, the pin was submerging and invisible a lot of the time as boats were finishing.
We had a problem with the ferry approaching its dock just as the fleet started to round D. The ferry passed through the middle of the fleet and was not impeded, but at least two boats had to change course to their disadvantage. For the next two races, if D is the first mark we will postpone the start until the ferry has passed the starting area.
Temptress, was out again. The rating we found for several L24’s is probably for boats with a spinnaker, which she does not have. Also joining us this week is a lovely S & S 50 ft. yawl, Pacifica. We are using her San Diego PHRF rating until she is assigned one for Puget Sound (which will probably be slower, something she doesn’t seem to need). The Thunderbird fleet has increased again with the addition of Boreas. The T-bird fleet has nearly doubled in the past two seasons, they must be breeding somewhere nearby.
