Cat’s Paw Series Results 2013, Race 3

SPARKLE on a beautiful June evening. Photo by Wendy Feltham. Fourteen boats came out to enjoy a beautiful warm summer evening.  The wind at the dock before the start was about 8 kts from the NNE, the closest course to give a windward/leeward leg was between the red Pt. Hudson buoy and the green Kilisut Hbr.  entrance buoy.  The Race Committee watched the wind fill in across the bay to Indian Island, it looked solid in the inlet and was building on the dock so they injudiciously added a side trip to the Marine Science Center mark, for [...]

Capt’n Dan Shares How He Saw a Race

By |June 25th, 2013|Categories: Racing Skills|Tags: |

For those of us who grind a way in the middle of the pack, the performance of the better sailors in the club is an ongoing mystery. Is it some trick boat part? One secret move? Dan Newland, the man with the parrot on his head, was kind enough to break down one Friday night race and you come to see it was a series of small, correct choices that took him to the front, again. Analysis of Cats Paw race #2 Jon Kaplan has hounded me relentlessly to write something up for the website and at long last, I [...]

Midsummer 2013 Results

17 boats get ready to start on a lovely June day at the 2013 Midsummer Regatta. Photo by Wendy Feltham. Swedish enthusiasm by Stig Osterberg and the crew on ODEN. By all counts, Midsummer was a great success this year.  17 boats came out for a beautiful day of sailing four windward/leeward races.  Pegasus rocked.  Guests had good races.  While Stig was a bit anxious at some starts, he and his beautiful crew represented the colors very well.  It was a great pleasure to see Sparkle out again, though one tended to hear them before seeing them. [...]

Cat’s Paw 2013 Race 2 Results

Another beautiful evening on the bay. The wind hovered around 5 kts but varied in direction often between N and NW.  There was  a challenging flood tide and local knowledge  appeared to be useful.  The course was SBTBF which turned out to be fairly ideal for the conditions, providing legs that were within 30 deg of windward/leeward.  All boats finished within an hour and a half. This week we welcomed Bluefin, an Olsen 25, to the fleet.  it will be fun to watch her when the wind picks up a bit and she planes away from the flock of Tbirds. [...]

MARTHA and ANNIE TOO start downwind. Photo by Sarah Fairbank Day one of the 30th Classic Mariners Regatta, got off to a slow start with a fast finish. 30 boats waited 50 minutes for the first start as a light SE wind died to be replaced by a nice NW wind.  A long triangle was set in the Bay with six starts and various portions of the course used.  The 6 meters raced the windward-leeward marks 3 times around, and the T-birds did the same twice around.  The A class sailed the triangle twice.  B class, schooners (unrated) [...]

How to Call Puffs, Upwind and Down

By |June 7th, 2013|Categories: Racing on the Bay, Uncategorized|Tags: |

As the summer "dinner wind" starts to set in, the evening races can be breezy and puffy. That's the way it was on the beat back to the "Y" buoy Wednesday night with wind tumbling off the cliffs and accelerating through the gap by the mill. Dealing with the puffs is one thing - some night watch DORADO taking a bight to weather in each puff - knowing what's ahead and how to describe it is another. Here's an article from Sailing World on what to look for on the water and how to communicate it to the rest of [...]

Stuart Sinclair 505 Classic Regatta Report by Jon “Noj” Henderson

By |June 4th, 2013|Categories: Uncategorized|

I look forward to this regatta every year for many reasons.  First of all Stuart Sinclair leaves a legacy of Awesome!  R.I.P. good friend. Mats Elf ordered a new mast to replace his bent one at the beginning of the year, and the delivery was delayed for whatever reason, but the target was to go for this regatta.  It was supposed to arrive FedEx on Wednesday.  On the way to work I heard on the radio that a FedEx truck had capsized on the I-5 and exploded in flames (just our luck).  Fortunately, that was not the truck with our mast [...]

Hooligan Navy

By |June 4th, 2013|Categories: Uncategorized|

This 47-minute documentary originally aired as part of the "Sea Tales" series on A&E. It tells a little-known story about a band of young yachtsmen and fishermen who were recruited during World War II to help protect the United States' East coast from Hitler's deadly fleet of Nazi U-Boats.  The sailors were sent out to find and confront the U-Boats equipped only with antique machine guns mounted on wooden recreational sailboats that were put into service so quickly the grey paint was still wet when they left the docks.
