The CB found a seemingly windless bay when leaving the Boat Haven but a wind line was noticed out towards Port Hudson. The breeze at Pt Hudson was 3 – 4 kts from 300° M. As the wind line did not appear to be moving into the bay to give access to the marks there, temporary L & W marks were set out about a mile apart for a multiple lap windward/leeward course.
During the start sequence the wind veered ~60°, causing a postponement to reset the course. The new wind direction and the current CB position made “B” a viable windward mark. A volunteer from the fleet reset the pin (twice) and as there was still no wind to leeward an “L” mark was not set.
Course SBF2 (4.3 nm.) was posted. This caused confusion to some as the downwind finish with Pin to Stbd. does not jibe with starting the second lap by crossing the line with the Pin to Port as it was for the first lap. The course posted (and sailed by most) should have been SBFBF which still affords the ability to shorten the course if desired. This will be rectified in the next update of the SI’s.
For the start on the new course, the wind was still light and variable but generally from the windward mark. Times for the first lap were in the order of 45 min. The wind deteriorated for most of the second lap with occasional puffs coming from N thru E. Towards the end it stabilized at 3 – 5 kts from 090°M. Second lap times were double the first.
