Six boats came out for a sunny, but chilly, and initially calm, evening. Visa (Islander 32) was welcomed to the fleet.
The course SITICBF (6.65 nm) was set and announced close to start time after the SE, 2 kt, very variable wind had settled to NW 5-6 kts. This course provided roughly windward/leeward legs and could be shortened at C (4.38 nm) had the wind died. It was observed that the legs from I to T and back were slow but the first boat was approaching C within an hour of the start, with the wind at 6.5 kts., so there was no need to shorten course.
Changes to PHRF Time Correction Method
PHRF handicap racing appears to work best for longer races with steady, mid-range, wind conditions. The Series races within the bay are short and the wind may vary in velocity and direction in different parts of the bay. It may be more fair to base a boat’s time correction on her elapsed time rather than a fixed distance. The boat’s assigned PHRF rating is the same for both correction methods.
This season the PHRF Bay Series races will use Time-on-Time (ToT) correction, the distance races will still use Time-on-Distance (ToD).
Everything you ever wanted to know about PHRF is in PHRF NW Handbook A good discussion of ToT correction is on page 23.
For ToD:- Corrected Time = Elapsed Time – PHRF rating(sec/nm) x Course length(nm)
For ToT:- Corrected Time = Elapsed Time x (650 / (520 + PHRF rating))
