Last Saturday’s races were designated as the Nightcap Series Final even though there is a race scheduled for Oct. 31 st . This week the Committee Boat is being hauled out for the winter. Next Saturday’s race, now dubbed the Halloween Race, will be run from the City Dock. Single start at 13:00, round the marks course, PHRF scoring, still NFS. Antics, dress and decoration in recognition of Halloween are traditional for this race. Later, Marks C, I, & Y will be removed for winter overhaul and cleaning.
On Saturday the wind all morning had been around 18 kts., steadily from the NW, and the bay full of whitecaps, great racing and easy course set-up was anticipated. Uncannily, as Committee headed out the wind softened and became very variable 5 – 9 kts. with frequent short gusts to 13 – 14 kts. The wind direction was oscillating rapidly through 90+ deg. Mark W was set and Committee headed downwind for about 1/2 mile and waited as the wind direction went through several cycles, trying to discern a mean. The oscillations showed little consistency with occasional extremes of 265 degM and 355 deg.M. As a best guess the line was set square to W for 290 deg.
Two PHRF boats checked in. The course set was SYGCGF – 6.86 nm. At the 13:25 start the wind was 10 – 13 kts. from 330 deg. The bearing to Y was 275 deg.
When the Thunderbirds started their first race five minutes later the wind was sagging to ~6 kts. and gusting to 16+. Direction was 315 deg. making the CB end of the line heavily favored. It remained so for the Gate rounding. Two boats had such a good start they were within a whisker of OCS.
As the mean wind direction during the first race was ~310 deg. the pin was moved to square the line to that.
For the start of the second race the wind had steadied a bit at 10 – 14 kts. but from 270 deg. favoring the pin by 45 deg. There was a postponement during the start sequence for a discussion about using I as the windward mark, which would have been good as the wind was aligned with I at that moment. Discussion ended when it was realized that the High School Racing team was using it as part of their course.
With plenty of wind available, course times were short so a third start was offered but there was little enthusiasm.
