Nine boats came out to drift around for a while, waiting for the wind to become apparent so a course could be set. Around 1:30 a light breeze filled in from the NE, normally an unstable direction in this bay. The RC quickly set course SCFYF, 2.26 nm. (crossing the line going from C to Y allowed for shortening of the course) and got off a start at 1:48.
The wind softened during the start and reversed to SE as the fleet approached, and slowly rounded, C. As the fleet came back towards the line, and the RC was seriously considering shortening course, the wind strengthened to SE 5 kts and the S flag stayed down. The wind held until about ¼ mile from Y where it became weak and kept reversing. This continued back to the finish line and when the last finishers crossed the line the wind was almost gone.
We were fortunate to be able to complete a race in such a light and unstable breeze, a tribute to the skill of our fleet. The last boat finished just 8 ½ minutes shy of the time limit. Ironically, by the time the CB got back to the Boat Haven the wind was SE 10 kts and increasing.
