Nine boats turned out on a warm, overcast afternoon for a long wait for a slow race around a short course.
The wind forecasts were mostly in agreement, 4 mph ESE, but on arrival at the Boat Haven the Windexs were seen to be pointing in random directions. The Committee Boat headed out in hope of better conditions in the bay but found only the occasional puff, never from the same direction.
Approaching 2 pm the puffs settled on a direction of 120ºM and course SWYF was set for 1 nm. By the time of the start sequence the wind had approached 3 kts. At the start one boat was over early (she was sailing the line and was carried over by the current) and the RC was late calling ”clear” as the boat was at the far end of the line and the RC couldn’t see the boat or the pin for a while.
The wind continued to build and by the midpoint of the race was a solid 4+ kts. Then the wind shifted to 160ºM and, as the fleet approached Y, started to die. The last two boats to finish were carried across the line mostly by the current.
A second race was not suggested.
