This was the race that nearly didn’t happen. The PRO loaded all the gear on the committee boat, inflated the marks, set up the flags and reader board well ahead of time. The Captain was called when he hadn’t shown up by 6 pm and said PRO (probably senile and certainly embarrassed) was reminded that he had been informed that the boat was unavailable this week. He then remembered the conversation and that it should have been a dock start.
It being too late to shift the gear to the dock a call was made to the fleet that the boat was unavailable and Sparkle and her crew stepped up and saved the day by becoming race committee pro tem. They stationed off the City Dock buoy, set course SITIF (4.1 nm.), started the fleet and then sailed the course themselves. Being first back (of course) they then recorded the finishes. Thanks to Sparkle and her crew for successfully covering for the RC ‘s mistake and running a great race.
Eleven boats came out for the race, nine Thunderbirds (a record) but only two for PHRF. For this race last year (its traditionally the best attended series) there were eleven PHRF boats. Wind conditions, consistently forecast to be 8 mph from the south, were actually around NW 5 kts., with occasional long gusts to 10 kts., but very variable. During the last half of the race the wind softened considerably.
As the Thunderbirds were racing one design their finish times were not recorded, just their order. However, the scoring program requires the times be input, even though it only reports them, so in future they will be recorded. This information will be of interest as there were reportedly some very close finishes in this race and also it will allow relative performance tracking. The times in this weeks report are fictitious, just there to maintain the finish order.
The Committee boat should be in service next week and everything back to normal.
