This week we finally managed to run two races. There was sunshine and a moderate, though unstable, breeze which eased and finally veered 50° as the afternoon progressed. Yet finishes were remarkably consistent. Owl finished the first race in 59¼ minutes and the second in 61½.
While setting up the course the wind direction was perfect for course SIGF, and was 8 – 11 kts., gusting to 13 but with long lulls to 3 – 4. Just before the start sequence for the first race the wind veered 20+°, but with the probability of it backing again, and only seven boats to crowd the CB, the start went ahead. The fleet made good time to I but as they passed the CB on the downwind leg the wind had dropped to 6 – 8 kts oscillating rapidly between 305° and 325°. It was noticed that two or three boats were sailing shorthanded and not flying spinnakers. There appeared not to be the usual hole at G (where the bluffs on Indian Island often mess with the wind). Wind at the CB at this time was down to 3 – 5 kts but it increased a little as the finishers approached.
The second race started in conditions similar to the first, a little less wind, 5 – 6 kts., from 315°. The boat end of the line was still favored though less so, still generating several close encounters. When the fleet was passing the CB on the downwind leg the wind had strengthened to 9+kts. and veered to North but by the time they were midway between the CB and G they appeared to be out of wind for a short while as indicated by the drooping spinnakers. After rounding G they found the wind was now steadily from North at 3+kts. making the last leg a single starboard tack.
Let’s see what we can make of next Saturday. A lot of “the usual suspects” have been missing the fun.
