And the awards went to…
- The Directional Helmet: Sockdolager, a Pacific Seacraft Dana 24, with Karen Sullivan, Jim Heumann and John Lynes aboard, was early for the start line so decided to do a 360 to slow down, then hit the pin and had to tack onto port right in front of a line of starboard boats. Fortunately she was going slow enough that no fouls or collisions ensued. This award, for a boat that had trouble navigating the course, was well deserved.
- The Golden Trident: The saltiest boat or crew gets this award. It went to Patrick Kingshill and Bene Velle, a wooden Lyle Hess gaff cutter. Flying all tanbarks sails, together, the main, three headsails and a fisherman made for the definition of saltiness.
- The Whak O’ Matic: This one, awarded for the best use of misspent energy, went to the Rozinante ketch Evangeline skippered by Blaise Holly. She started in the wrong class, which means she was five minutes behind to begin with, but ended up with a respectable 4th place, so that misspent energy went to good use.
- The Wet Ass Award: The Capri Cyclone 13, Orange Crush, skippered by Liam Pareis made it twice around with the cruising class. Conditions were fairly calm butt water did come aboard and evidence showed that the award was well earned.
- The Hook: For the last place boat. To be used next year to hook on to a faster boat. This year’s winner was the largest boat in the fleet, Blue Star, a Walloon Schooner. New to PT Bay she gave a valiant effort, but was so far behind that the race committee moved the finish line to help her complete the course!
- The Perpetual Trophy: This goes to the overall winner. This year’s race was a kind-of modified pursuit race with Tbirds starting first and doing three laps, slow cruising boats going second and doing two laps, faster cruising boat next doing two laps, then the racing boats going last and doing three laps. The winner was from the fast cruising group – Calypso, a C & C 43, run by Tracy Ryan and Markus Koch.
- The haul out from the Port of Port Townsend, given in memory of shipwright and mentor Van Hope, went to Mark Blatter on Merlin. Many thanks to the port for this generous gift.
- The haul-and-hang from Sea Marine went to Mathew Mitchell on Fiddlehead. Thanks too to Sea Marine for their support of the Shipwrights Regatta.
