Perpetual Trophy

Overall winner is added each year.

The Peg Leg

Wilbur the peg leg is awarded to the first boat over the start line. It is to be worn by the skipper the next year as a handicap.

The Wire Cruising Boat

Given to first in the cruising class.

The Directional Helmet

Given to a boat that had trouble navigating the course.

The Golden Trident

Given for the saltiest boat or crew.

The Hook

Given to the last boat to cross the finish line. To be used the next year to hook on to a faster boat.

The Whak'o'Matic

Given for the best use of misspent energy.

Van Hope Community Spirit Award

For the most young people on a boat, or for the most pick-up crew, or for the boat showing the most community spirit in some other way. TBD by the race committee.

History of some of the awards

How the trophies came to be.

The Peg Leg

For first over the starting line. The winner would have to wear it the next year as a handicap. Made by Pete Langley. Came off the end of the main boom of a Friendship sloop named Wilbur that had come from the east coast but was too far gone to save.

The Hook

Last place trophy is “Captain Hook” made from a WillCocks/Crittion pump handle and brass scabbard made from a lamp fixture, meant to latch on the vessel in front of them so they would not be last in the next year’s race.Made by Pete Langley.

Perpetual Trophy

Originally for the overall winner of the race (one start for everybody). The trophy base is made from a piece of the garboard plank from the Schooner “Quessett”. Original name was “Coaster II” built for Murray Peterson by Goudy and Stephens in East Boothbay, Maine in 1932. The spire timber is a piece from the War Hawk that sank in Discovery Bay in 1883. The lag eye or jack rod stanchion that holds the belying pin is one of the first run of parts made by the Foundry for the Lady Washington yard arms and is still in use today. The belying pin also made by the Foundry is to signify a place of security or to be made fast (tie off). A true piece of shipwright history. Made by Pete Langley.
