The Wednesday evening bay series of races is split into five individual series, one per month. The names the series were invented in the early days of PTSA to roughly corespondent with the normal weather for each month.
Whitecap – April
Sunshine – May
Midsummer – June
Catspaw – July
Dog Days – August
Look for the committee boat out on the bay wherever it looks like the wind is best. It is a 30′ powerboat, with a flybridge, named “Committee”, flying a big orange flag.
Start time is 6pm. Thunderbirds start first, racing one-design on a windward / leeward course. They normally run two races per evening. The committee boat will have a course board on the stern specifying the course to be sailed.
PHRF boats start second sailing a ‘random leg’ course using mostly fixed mark around the bay. Again, see the board on the stern of the committee boat for the course. This start is five minutes after final horn for the Thunderbirds. There is normally one longer race.
After racing concludes there is usually a gathering at the clubhouse to tell stories, work out any conflicts that may have occurred, and view drone footage of the races. Results are posted on ptsail.org, usually the next day.
Our goal is to encourage as many boats to race as possible, so if other one-design fleets would like to race on a Wednesday evening the race committee will do it’s best to accommodate.
All the details about the course board, mark designations, starting sequences and flags, rules, etc. are in the General Sailing Instructions. Note, we do not do protests in PTSA races, so if you think you have fouled someone do your turns.
