Here’s who won the awards for 2024

  • The Peg-Leg for first in the racing class went to the 505 named 8 ball – Lucas Hurt and Piper Dunlap smoked the fleet to take first.
  • Golden Trident Award for the saltiest boat went to Penguin, for cramming four people and a small child into an 18-foot double-ended spritsail skiff while avoiding being run down by other boats.
  • Directional Helmet Award went to Maluhia, an Acapulco 40, for a second start because the first one was so darned fun she had to do it again. Race watchers were hoping for some carnage when  her spinnaker started flogging on the downwind leg and she headed off toward Point Hudson, but she recovered and finished a rousing second from last.
  • Whak O Matic, for the best use of misspent energy went to Blew Bird, for rounding the leeward mark in fine style, going so fast she needed to use her spinnaker as a sea anchor, after which she continued toward shore, probably anticipating the free beer and pizza a little early.
  • The Wire Cruising boat trophy goes to the first boat in the cruising class. This year it was awarded in the large boat class and the winner was the Moore 24 Furthermore.
  • Wet Ass Award went to Leaf, a wooden 1960 Alcort Sunfish whose crew mistook Port Townsend Bay for Miami Beach but decided to finish anyway.
  • The Hook went to last place finisher Abaco, after a nail-biter in which she was in the lead ahead of Tarani and Maluhia, but paused at the finish line to generously donate third and second to last place to the two larger boats. It’s totally understandable because her crew was tired from bailing ten percent of Port Townsend Bay out of the boat.
