The PTSA weekend overnight to Watmough Bay shaped up as a match race between the Alden 44 Puffin (Chris King accompanied by Matt, Xavier, and Helena Cooper ) and the 1930 39′ Yawl Erin (Steve Chapin and Mike Kennedy). A 35′ Wauqiez Pretorian Alente (Terry Spencer) joined a little later in the crossing from City Dock to Watmough Bay. The trio was accompanied by the motor cruiser Kailita (Bobbi and Roland Nikles, Jeff and Angela Brantley).
David Burrows started the fleet at City Dock promptly at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The wind was light, with high overcast and some fog. Helena Cooper assumed a sharp lookout position at the bow, while brother Xavier prepared for more wind ahead by doing push-ups on the foredeck.
The sun soon turned Admiralty Inlet grey into eastern Juan De Fuca Straight tropical indigo. Sharp lookouts and push ups worked as Puffin bested Erin’s crossing to Watmough Bay by a couple of hours.
Everyone found a favorite spot to anchor.
A hike to the top of the cliff provided spectacular views….
Fun was had….
And on Sunday, Erin got her revenge.
See you next year!
Erin won out on Sunday only because my crew was having too much fun to bother with the start!
