Before the start the wind was varying between 340° & 010°M, 2 – 5 kts. By the start the wind had steadied on 330° and built to 6 – 7 kts with the occasional gust to 9. It was sunny and warm, a beautiful day for a race.
Unfortunately, as the fleet was approaching McCurdy Point, the wind died to the point that they were unable to progress against the building flood. Nobody finished.
Next up in the Distance Series is the ever popular P to P race and party on May 18/19 weekend

So that’s 2 races, 13 entries, 1 finish, 12 DNFs — what’s wrong with this picture? The common factor is that both times, the fleet is sent off into a dead foul tidal current. It really doesn’t matter that there was too much wind for one race and not enough for the other; you can’t predict the wind. But you can predict the tides, so why aren’t these races planned to make use of the current, not to fight it? This is just discouraging for people who want to do races other than the up and down buoy races, and it just isn’t necessary.
I’ll post a longer discussion on the PHRF forum shortly with a set of suggestions for further distance races with dates and times that work with the tides, not against them.
cheers,
Lynn
