For the last afternoon of racing this year, the wind forecasts agreed on 6 mph. SE moving to SSE and adding rain as the afternoon progressed. Any forecast with an E in it is a worry for the RC when planning a course. If the wind is light it may die and slowly, but steadily, back to NW, if it is stronger and more established it may be unstable and oscillating by ±25° or more, or it may be wildly erratic.
When the CB went out to set the course it found, ½mile from the breakwater, a steady 7kt. breeze from around 120°M. The sea surface did not indicate any discontinuities around the bay so course STIF was set.
About 5min. before the scheduled start sequence the wind rapidly dropped below 4 kts. and backed to 60°M making the set course useless. While the RC was preparing to set out temporary marks and realign the course (no permanent marks are usable for this wind direction) the wind veered to its original general direction, oscillating between110°M and 130°M at 5kts., making the course reasonable again. After waiting a few minutes to make sure the general direction stayed put, the fleet was started.
Shortly after the start the wind at the CB backed to 90°M. and built to 10kts. Observation of the fleet as they went to windward suggested that they had the increased wind speed but a lesser shift. The wind at the tower appeared only a little on the fluky side. When the fleet passed the CB on the downwind leg the wind was 6kt. at 150°M then decreasing to 4kts. During the final upwind leg the wind built 9+kts at the finish. The wide spread of the finish times is indicative of the challenging variability of the wind over the course.
For the second race the wind had grown to 11 – 12 kts. but veered to130°M which made it appropriate to set G as the windward mark. The pin was moved to square the S/F line to the wind.
The first two attempts at a start resulted in General Recalls, possibly partly due to the line having been shortened when the pin was reset. After the successful start the wind backed to 130°M and oscillated ±10° at 11+kts., staying that way for the rest of the race. This made I a more accurate downwind mark than it had been at the start. The rain did not moderate the wind.
So the 2018 season ends with a pair of races challenging to Skippers, Crews and the Race Committee. It also ends with the most races, 11, sailed in a six week series since the formation of PTSA. Congratulations and thanks to all involved.
