We are very sad to have to announce the sudden, unexpected and untimely passing to Fiddler’s Green of fellow sailor Eric Anderson, Skipper of the Bystead 30 Andiamo Again and persistent competitor in the PHRF Fleet. This week were again presented with steady firm winds and were able to run two races. As the fleet completed the three mile course in only about 40 minutes each time, a third start was offered but was declined (Some responses may have been impolite, but it was difficult to hear above the wind).
When the CB arrived on station the wind was 10-12 kts. with long lulls of 7-9 but few gusts. Wind direction was steady at 300°M which was perfect for setting W/L course SYGF.
In the 15 minutes before the first start the wind built to15-17 kts with gusts to 19+ and backed to 280° M skewing the course by 20+ degrees, CB favored. Faced with the prospect of delaying the start and relocating the CB between T and I, or hoping the wind would veer before the start (the wind at the Mill weather station was oscillating through 25°) the RC made the easier choice and racing started on time. Unfortunately, the wind did not veer and, at the CB, remained steadily at 280°M throughout both races.
For the first race the wind continued to build a little and only four boats chanced their spinnakers on the downwind leg. None had observable problems. The wind softened somewhat for the upwind leg to the finish.
The wind built again for the second race and three boats decided they had had enough fun for one day and went back to the dock. Racing was close, the first three boats finished in the same minute. There was contact between the first two.
Although the wind had been in the high teens for several hours, the sea state was not a significant factor for the fleet. There were few whitecaps and wind-waves appeared to be less than one foot.
