There was confusion over the start time for the first race of the series due to the calendar on the website, and the race reminder, showing a noon start, while the SI’s (and history) called for 13:00. In the event the wind was so wildly capricious in strength and direction that the race did not start until 12:48 so it appeared no boats were inadvertently left at the dock. The on-line calendar has been corrected to match the SI’s and an e-mail sent to all members to set the start time at 13:00 for the rest of the series. Maybe the wind will have stabilized by then.

Armed with forecasts in agreement for 6 kt winds from SSE the RC planned to set up between TB or TC. But, as usual, planning was a waste of time. Jazz found a flat calm in the bay and waited. Eventually tantalizing breezes kept springing up long enough to consider setting a course but each time from a different heading, courses from GB to TY were all considered for a few minutes at a time. The wind became even more variable in direction and location before settling in as a northwesterly. (Two close hauled boats were observed 200 yds apart sailing reciprocal courses).

The wind strengthened and steadied enough that a square line could be set for course SIGF (3.24 nm.). During the sequence the wind veered 30 deg. and the RC planned to postpone just before the start, but the wind backed during the last minute and the start was good. The wind at the start was around 6 1/2 kts. from 320 deg.M.

The wind on the course appeared to continue to be initially somewhat unstable. The usual hole at G appeared to be largely absent and the wind stiffened for the beat to the finish. Overall the conditions rewarded good tactical sailing.

As there was good wind at the finish, and the leading boats completed the course in just under an hour, the RC offered a second start. But while waiting for the tail-enders to finish the rain got harder and softened the wind so, to the relief of all, the offer was withdrawn.

Kuma San has acquired a new owner and crew and will need time to get accustomed to their ways before again becoming a force to be reckoned with. Andiamo Again continues to come out in a lonely search for other PHRF boats to play with.

Don’t forget, if you come out for a noon start next week you will get an extra hour of practice time.
