For the first race of the series the sun shone and the wind blew. We enjoyed the near perfect conditions so much that we went round the course twice.
The wind was a steady 12 – 14 kts. from 310 degM and the Committee Boat set up between I and G, well aligned with the wind. The course SIGF2 was set. After a five minute postponement for moving the pin to square the line both starts were clean. We continue to start Class B – Thunderbirds first as it clears the starting area quickly for the second start, Class A – PHRF. After the start the wind began to oscillate between 280 and 290 degM somewhat skewing the course. During the second lap the wind eased to 10 – 12 kts. with long gusts to 14. It was observed during both roundings of G that wind in that area was more light and variable than the rest of the course. The course was ratherlong for the conditions at 6 1/2 nm. but the wind was adequate to finish all the boats within the time limit; although the last boat had only 7o seconds to spare.
We welcomed two visitors to race with us this week, Soling #840 and Flysburen, a lovely blue wooden double-ender. Unfortunately our SI’s were not so welcoming and confused them both about when to cross the S/F line.
