The Shipwrights Regatta is the second oldest continuously run sailboat race on Port Townsend Bay, only the Classic Mariners Regatta has run for longer. In 1992 a few shipwrights got together and decided to hold a race, in February, specifically for boatbuilders. It was a simple affair with a casual afterparty at the now defunct Landfall restaurant at Point Hudson. The prizes were homemade and funny. The idea was to have fun. Fast forward to today and the race is open to all, it’s still in February, the prizes are still homemade and funny, and the goal is still to have fun. In fact, this race usually has the biggest turnout of the year. No-one can really figure out why. Maybe because it is so Port Townsend to have a big race in one of the coldest months of the year. Maybe because everybody’s ready to leave the dark behind and pretend summer will be here soon. Or, maybe people just want an excuse to party. Whatever the reason it’s always a blast.
