Thirteen boats turned out to race in conditions which, compared with the last few Friday evenings, were much more suited for sailboat racing.  This week, and probably for the rest of the series, the race was run from City Dock.  The afternoon Northwesterly gusting to the high 20’s moderated by 6 pm to about 12 kts. at the dock.  The wind direction of 260° M made YT a good windward/leeward leg so course SDYTYDF was set.  Ten minutes before the start the wind veered to 310° M, and stayed there, making YG a much better windward/leeward course, so the course was reset to SDYGYDF.  The fleet was notified of the course change by loud hailer then by VHF and again five minutes later by loud hailer.

The previously advertised ten minute postponement successfully allowed the 6:45 ferry to escape its slip before being run down by the A fleet.  The Thunderbird start resulted in a general recall.  Most of the boats were bunched at the pin and overlapping so it was hard to see who, and how many, were over early.  Judging from the time the pin disappeared to the start signal it looked like half the fleet.  It took a while to get the fleet to return as no-one seemed to notice the two extra horns.  The re-start was clean.

About the time the T-birds reached mark Y the wind started to ease but it held direction.  At the dock it was 6 kts. gusting to 10, but judging from the heel of the boats it was stronger in the bay.  By the time the A fleet was halfway along the downwind leg it was apparent that two boats had missed the notification of the course change.  Note: In future, three long horn blasts will indicate the fleet should expect a communication from the Race Committee.

Unfortunately, as the T-birds were reaching from Y for the finish, the ferry returned and all except the leading boat had to alter course as it headed for its slip.  It is impossible to tell from the finish times what impact this had on finish order.  The ferry did come to a stop for while, presumably to assess the situation and see if everyone was going to pass the slip soon, then sounded the landing signal and turned for its slip.

As we have had weather cancellations this series we will run the race 7 make-up (weather permitting) on Friday May 1st.  Also, as there appear to be no regatta conflicts, we will run a second make-up on Friday May 8th.  Hopefully we will get a full six race series with a throw-out.  The Port-to-Port race is the following days, May 9th and 10th, when tides are favorable.
