Eight wooden boats came out for the first race of the series. The North wind was very light and variable and the start was delayed ten minutes for it to strengthen and stabilize a little. In anticipation of more wind in the Inlet the course was set at SMTF. Unfortunately the stronger winds did not materialize and there was a strong flood tide. It was a long struggle to reach the M mark. The run toward the tower was faster but then the wind softened again and began varying through 180 deg. In the end only two boats finished within the time limit. The race committee was overambitious for the conditions and set too long a course, one that could not be shortened without being able to contact every boat.
At least the rain tailed off and we had a beautiful warm sunny afternoon to be out on the water.
The next wooden boat series races are June 8/9, the Classic Mariners Regatta, which constitutes races 2, 3, and 4 of the wooden boat series.
