The 2019 CMR was lightly attended, but eventful. 4 “A class” boats and 7 “B class” boats signed up.
The winds for the first race on Saturday were light and VERY variable. Minutes before the start, there was an almost 180 degree shift. After a 25 minute postponement, there was a gentle twice around, with a long delay for the “B’s” to finish. After accommodating another wind shift the second race started with better wind, but a very short start/finish line (RC error). Unfortunately, with tide and wind effects the line was even shorter for the finish. This was not noticed until the first finish, so the line could not be changed. For the second race “A’s” sailed twice around and “B’s” sailed once around. Much better racing!
The wind gods were more favorable for Sunday’s long race. The tide/current gods didn’t seem too happy with that. One of the marks, set earlier in the morning, aspired to a new home in the direction of Port Ludlow. After another 30 minute postponement, the wayward mark was reset and the race started in a nice northerly. Of course the minus one to plus 8 tidal shift had begun to flow harder and made the Ft. Worden leg more difficult. Sir Isaac and Pacifica worked it out well, and Pacifica corected to win race 3.
Attached are the results. In an unusual request a member of the B Class claimed that all the “B” class participants wanted to use “across the line finishes” rather than corrected times since most of them don’t have official PHRF ratings and have been assigned provisional ratings that they don’t like. For the reasons explained below the results do not accede to this request and are handicapped.
Everyone registered for a PHRF handicapped race. As a courtesy to allow a valid entry, those that do not have a certificate are assigned a temporary rating based, when possible, on a similar boat with a PHRF rating. Unfortunately, for most of the boats registering for CMR there are no comparables so an estimate is made once the boat has been seen. In prior years a team of very experienced sailors was set up to provide this estimate for first time of entry boats during the skippers’ meeting, but was not available this year. If subsequently a boat is obviously much faster or slower than estimated, the temporary rating can be changed retroactively. In practice, the same boats have been competing year after year with the same temporary rating and do not petition for change, or obtain a PHRF certificate.
The Race Committee runs races and scores results as set out by the Organizer in the “Notice of Race” and “Sailing Instructions”. Requests for changes in format should be addressed to the Organizer before the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions are finalized.

First, any rating system in Port Townsend Bay is a wish. As usual the wind conditions, variability in strength and direction and the local knowledge of currents rate a 9 and ratings a 5. Hakoom always learns something on every Regatta. Last year we learned we need to cross the finish line. The Race Committee continues to improve and always works very hard to control the alpha teams and prevent chaos.
I was involved in the ‘agreement’ for boat to boat on the B group. It was a conversation 15minutes before the race between Ariel, Windsong and Hakoom… No other boats were notified and we ‘gave up’ our rating in the interest of fun and challenge. With the issue that our subgroup did not consider others in this agreement suggests that we were only concerned about our three boats. So, it seems we could ‘award’ our bragging rights within our subgroup and leave the overall race results as PHRF. In fact, that is the case… though i am quite confused as to what set of numbers above are governing.
Having said that, our agreement demonstrated (one time only, conditions relevant), that Ariel and Hakoom sailed as if they are rated at 283 and Windsong cleaned our clock…. she clearly out-sailed us…
Able, on Sunday, destroyed us outsiders and really did a formable job. If they and Toadstool had not been caught in a cruel calm on Saturday, the results would have been different overall. But, that is the game…
I established my 283 PHRF 10 years ago by taking Able’s 300 and guessing the impact of small sail area increases due to 18″ of mast, lower basic hull weight due to SG of Port Orford cedar vs oak for keel components and 8″ advantage of inboard chainplates for pointing… I am NOT a racing boat….
We missed Vito du Mas this year as she usually guides us through the doldrums, whirlpools and waterfalls of PT Bay… seems like a wedding is really a weak excuse…. we need more boats…
Again. The Racing Committee has always been great. Masochism must be at core of volunteering for this difficult task and our boat always cheers you as we cross, or not cross, the finish line…
