Last week’s race was unusual in that we sailed a triangle (SBTF – 4.1 nm.) in a 3 – 8 kt. wind which slowly veered from NE to NW appropriately timed to create three windward legs. Additionally, rounding the finish mark took unplanned extra tacks due to the strong current running NE. This week the wind was stronger but not necessarily steadier. Before the start the wind was around 8 kts. mainly 285 deg. Either YG or IT would be fair compromises for windward/leeward legs so, to make it interesting, SDYGTIDF (6.2 nm.) was set. After the start the wind became much more variable. At the dock it averaged 8 – 10 kts., with short gusts 13+ kts and long lulls below 4 kts. the challenge was that the lulls were below 250 deg and the gusts were above 270. It was later reported that the winds behaved similarly but were stronger in the middle of the bay. So the course carefully set for windward/leeward legs became almost entirely reaching.
