Thirteen boats came out to enjoy a perfect evening sail. The wind had been blowing steadily all day at 8 – 10 kts gusting to 15 from the Northwest and continued to do so at race time. There did not appear to be any flat spots inside or outside the bay. As the tide had just turned to a small flood and the wind was stronger outside the bay the course was set for SAMTAF, 6.25 nm. providing some windward/leeward legs but mostly long reaching legs. The use of A as the first mark was to provide a windward start. The boats completed the course in about an hour and a quarter with a fifteen minute spread between first and last.
At the start it appeared some people had forgotten the published Race Instructions as several Thunderbirds started with the A class. Fortunately they realized their error and were all able to get back behind the line with one minute to spare. They were not penalized for being in the starting area before their class flag was raised.
After the start it was noticed that boats were having trouble rounding mark A, the small yellow tet. It was set among anchored boats which reduced visibility of it and maneuvering room somewhat but some boats were getting hung up on it and dragging it. Later investigation determined that it was anchored using mostly polypropylene line, which is unacceptable as an anchor rode. This not been noticed before because the small tet had previously been used as mark D and was set in deeper water. The acquisition of a three foot tall inflatable yellow cylindrical mark to provide a more visible D freed up the tet for use as A or X. At A the water is only about 35 ft. deep leaving a lot of slack line to float to the surface and get hooked on keels and rudders. This line has now been replaced with nylon, and given adjustable scope as the water at X is 70+ feet.
