First off – so you don’t miss the announcement – the start for next week’s race (Oct 6 th) will be rescheduled to 1:00 pm, even then there may be a postponement.  This is to allow time for the Kinetic Skulpture race “vehicles” on the waterborne section of their course to clear our starting area.  If there is a postponement please keep well clear of the area, some of these creations can barely float or propel, let alone maneuver, and I’m sure they don’t know the right of way rules.

The 2013 Nightcap series is getting “interesting”!

Race 1

For the first race, on Sept 15, when the race committee arrived at the dock, the pin was invisible in the fog.  Luckily a light Northerly breeze followed by a light Westerly coming off the land started dissipating the fog and blew the rest out into the inlet.  The wind then died for a while, delaying the start for the eight boats that came out.  Ten minutes later a light breeze came in from the East.  After waiting a while to ensure the breeze was steadying, the fleet was sent off for a very short course – SBF2.  The flood was nearly over and there were no reports of the usual problems rounding the buoy in light air.  The wind continued to build some and it was a quick race, so maybe we should have gone round three times.  For this race we welcomed Mabuhay as a new addition to the Thunderbird  fleet.   The race results are below.

Race 2

On Sept 22nd,  cancellation of this race was a no-brainer.   There was a Gale Warning in force and by mid morning the wind was already blowing over 20 kts from the South, with much stronger gusts, and forecast to build further.   Large seas were forming as they rolled up the bay.   We don’t need to risk damaging equipment or injuring sailors, its not fun anymore.

Race 3

Initially, cancelling the race on Sept 28 th was a tough indecision.  Although there was a Storm Watch in effect,  winds were light in the morning with few whitecaps and the detailed forecasts showed reasonable winds, ~18 kts, until late afternoon when they were to zoom up to 30 – 40 kts.  The race committee traveled to the Boat Haven to consult with the fleet.  In the event there were only two brave crews to be found (Sirocco and Thatuna) and the race was cancelled by consensus.

The question has been raised as to how we can distribute advance notification of a cancellation.  The main problem is that the decision has often not been made until the last minute as we have been generally reluctant to cancel a race.   However, whenever possible we will put it on the web site.  I could suggest that a NOAA Gale Warning (or above) in Admiralty Inlet, covering the race time, means an automatic cancellation. But that impacts our flexibility to account for local conditions and timing. I’d like some feedback on that.
