Calling all Skippers

We are putting together a list of skippers that need crew occasionally for the PTSA races (well, for any races really.) We hope to have an influx of new crew members, both experienced sailors and new ones, and would like to help them connect with skippers who can utilize them. If you are interested in being on this list, please send your name and phone and e-mail to Kathy Grace at bonz@olympus.net (or 301-4938.) The list will be on the ptsail.org website. If you do not wish the information to be on the website, but still are willing to take on new crew, just designate that when you reply.

We are working on “rewards” for those of you that are so generous with your knowledge and boat. Your willingness to encourage new sailors is appreciated. Stay tuned for more information.

Thank you,

Your PTSA board

From Dan Newland.

Here is a Jim Donovan’s Yellow Naped Amazon parrot boating on the scale model of the 6 meter sport boat he is building. This bird LOVES to sail and loves water sports! Here are some more with him sitting on his custom made Harken parrot perch on board our boat, Pegasus XIV during the Wooden Boat Festival. And eating from a spoon, he is pretty amazing with his spoon or fork! Robert is a great bird that loves to talk, especially when sailing. The last picture shows the 6 meter sport boat Jim is finishing up (but it has taken a back burner to the 90′ racing yacht he is managing/designing in Anacortes).

More of Jim’s work can be found at his site, www.jpdonovandesign.com.

This years “Port to Port Race” will be a Club Race between the Port Ludlow Yacht Club and PTSA and will be one day, one way, only. It is a revival of a race the clubs had in earlier years. In this club race, the sailing association with the three fastest boats wins the perpetual trophy and bragging rights for the next year. The clubs alternate hosting the event, and this year Port Ludlow is the host. The race will start in Port Townsend at 9am from the City Dock, go around Marrowstone Island (not through the “Cut”), and terminate in Port Ludlow bay. There is no entry fee and there will be a party and BBQ at Ludlow after the race, hosted by the PLYC. A skippers meeting at 8am at the NWMC will go over details.

We need representation for the Port Townsend fleet!!! We need as many boats as possible to go out for the event. It is a pleasant sail to a bay with great anchorage and marina and a welcoming sailing community.

The date is August 6th, a Saturday. Please notify Satch Yarbrough as soon as you know you are going, so he can let the Ludlow sailors know how many to plan for at the BBQ, by August 1st at the latest.

Satch’s contact info is: beercanracer@hotmail.com or 643-3248(cell) or 379-6876(h)

If you wish to make reservations at the Port Ludlow Marina, their number is 877-344-6725.

Come out and represent your town and bring home the Gold (trophy)!

Steve L. Davis WILLISTON, S.C. – Inter-nationally acclaimed marine illustrator, Stephen L. Davis passed away at home June 24, 2011 in Williston, SC. Born June 12, 1947 to Gilbert and Juanita Davis in Nampa, ID. Stephen earned a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Idaho and after a successful career, turned his focus to his true love: boats. Regularly featured in numerous magazines including Sail, Popular Mechanics, Power and Motor Yacht, along with illustrating books; his work was not limited to marine design, but also included horse trailers and planes. In 2010, Stephen relocated from Port Townsend, WA and Nampa, ID to Williston, SC to be with his daughter and her family. He took on the title of Barn Manager at Can’t Wait Till Later Farm and over saw the care of his daughter’s International event horses.

Stephen continued design and illustration but especially enjoyed the roles of grandfather, photographer and the simple pleasures of friends and family. Always quick to smile, his faith kept him strong whenever there were challenges. Preceded in death by both of his parents, Stephen leaves behind wife Jan of Port Townsend, WA; daughter Mellisa Davis Warden, son in law Steven Warden, and granddaughter Ainsley Warden of Williston, SC; sister Janet Crumpton of Nampa, ID; brother Michael Davis of Nampa, ID; numerous nieces and nephews; and loving friends wherever he went. As per Stephen’s wishes, a celebration of life will take place 2 pm, July 24th, 2011 at Fort Worden. Please contact family members for details. An online register is available at www.blizzardfuneralhome.com

Opening Day was difficult time for boating. The “parade” was thin and the crowds observing were thinner. The later boats sailing into PT from Seattle faced a building flood and dying wind, and were often seen sailing backwards.

The Wooden Boat Fleet, got off to good start but found little wind near the tower and diminished wind for the return to finish. It’s been good to see Cubana out again.

Also participating in both races, without a rating, has been Second Wind. They were 6th in the first race at 13:53:08 and 6th in the second race at 15:38:49.

There is an errant computer setting for this series that will be corrected before the next report. A race is already being dropped, putting Annie Too and Sirocco in a tie, when Annie Too should be ahead at this time.

Hoping everyone is now warm and dry.
