Vince Townrow, Commodore of Port Hadlock Yacht Club is planning a couple of cruises this year and has invited all our members to join in the fun. Here is a lettter I recieved from Vince with the details:

Proposed Weekend Cruises for the 2012 season.

They should be informal and a way to have fun on the water.

Spring and Fall to ensure some sort of weather but not too cold. Reasonably close to Port Hadlock to reduce the logistics. I would plan to invite members of the clubs in Port Townsend and Sequim to join us in the good time.

Hunter Bay on Lopez Island, 2011

Spring Cruise to Hunter Bay

May 5 to Hunter Bay on Lopez Island.

A very pleasant anchorage, well sheltered with great views about 30 miles from the Port Hadlock moorings. It is situated beyond the west end of Lopez Pass. Suggested that we would arrive around the 1700 hours leaving plenty of time for dinner (Pot Luck?) and socializing. Sunset is 20:30. There is a dock at the entrance of the bay with public parking and allegedly a deli 2.2 miles down the road.

Currents (at least according to C-Map) are the most favorable this weekend in the month. They show a favorable ebb thru the Straits past Point Partridge on Whitbey until midday with a flood to carry us up to Lopez Island till late afternoon. The current through Lopez Pass is favorable until 2000 hours. The return shows favorable current through Lopez Pass until 1300 hours and favorable current past Point Wilson from 1200 to 2000 hours. Now if the wind would cooperate it would be perfect…

In order to generate enthusiasm, challenge and to give the competitive something to do I would propose that the Skippers will publicly state the time they will arrive close aboard R4 situated at the west end of Lopez Pass. The Skipper who most closely achieves the arrival time wins Bragging Rights for the weekend. Perhaps we could find a nice stone on the beach as a trophy? All methods of propulsion are encouraged.

Fall Cruising at the PHYC

September 15 Mackay Harbor on the south side of Lopez Island, A nice reasonably sheltered harbor with a small dock at the north end. There is an excellent store just a short walk up the road. There are also blackberry bushes which hopefully will still be in season. The blackberries will go very nicely with the ice cream from the store.

You can contact Vince at 410-937-4997 or email at: townrow80@msn.com

Hope to see you out on the water,

At the December 6th PTSA Board meeting elections for 2012 officers were held and the following people were unanimously voted for by all present:

President: Satch Yarbrough
VP: Steve Scharf
Secretary: Kathy Grace
Treasurer: Ed Edwards

Positions are effective immediately. We are in desperate need of a picture of this esteemed crew in proper blazers and yachting caps. Apparently, no such picture exists at the current time. We can hope.

And a thanks to Stig for all his efforts in the past year, especially for his championing of the Midsummer Regatta and in general raising the level of racing on the Bay.

Change in the Sailing Instructions for the Summer Series

We apologize if we confused some of you by naming the temporary tetrahedron mark off the ferry dock “K”. Even though we have never used the “K” for Kala Point mark, it is still on the course map that way and I should have thought of that. So to correct the problem, we have renamed the temporary tet mark that is usually placed out from the ferry dock “D”. D for Don’t Go There (or D for the people who did go there.) The D mark can also be used as a rounding mark if it keeps racers away from the ferry dock, in which case it will be indicated on the letter board which way to round it. So, in short:

Mark D must be kept to shore ward or passed as shown on the letter board.

Independently of the presence or absence of “D”, all racers are to keep at least 100 yards clear of the ferry and ferry dock at all times.

There is a link to the revised Course Key and Marks and Their Labels in the blue box to the left.

PTSA is proud to announce that West Marine of Port Townsend recently become a sponsor to our events, by donating all the ground tackle and buoy for the replacement of the missing mark “Y,”( which should be in by the summer series.) This is no small donation, as the cost of the replacement ground tackle exceeds $500.00.

The Staff at the P.T. West Marine has been busy updating inventory, and if you have not been in lately be sure to check it out. They have added lots of new cordage, including Endura Braid, and Technora T900 that will be in soon. There is a expanded Harken section, a new selection of winch handles, and they have expanded the wire rope department. There is also a new area with a nice selection of handheld VHF radio’s.

It’s fair to say this local store is trying real hard to get our attention by leaning more into the sailing arena with products and donations. I hope we all make a point to stop in and say “thank you” and to support their business as well.

Fair Sailing, Satch
