Owl creeping up on Magic Bus in the first downwind leg

Around noon, the strong Easterly winds of the morning suddenly eased and switched to very light Westerlies and, by race time, were light and variable with a mainly Northerly component.

The RC was about to set up a course with Y as the leeward mark and a temporary mark by the Ferry dock for windward, when the wind backed far enough to make this impossible. Finally mark I was picked as windward and a temporary leeward mark set about 3/4 mile from it in the direction of Fort Townsend SP. Course SILF2 was posted and the fleet finally started at 18:40 with only a 3 -5 kt breeze. It was noticed during the start that the wind had backed further and the windward leg was nearly a port tack fetch. By the second lap the wind had veered to its original direction and strengthened to 6+ kts.

Given the vagaries of the wind, racing was close, with five boats crossing the line within two minutes. The water was flat, the rain held off, the boats moved well and, except for the CB, were back in their slips before dark.  It was a very pleasant start for this season.
