Once again the CB left the Boat Haven to find a glassy sea surface and a long frustrating wait for the wind to make its intentions clear. After a while there were occasional puffs, up to 3 kts. but from random directions. For a while the wind appeared to strengthen in the outer bay as a Northerly but, just as the CB was preparing to head over to set up between T and B, the breeze switched to SW and died. After a few puffs from the South the wind settled on NE (as forecast). The RC hurriedly set tets about a 1/2 mile apart in a SE/NE line in the middle of the bay, set the pin and anchored, setting course SWLF2 (2 nm.). Whereupon the wind veered about 20 deg. Apart from re-squaring the start line the other marks were not adjusted.

The fleet started, almost 90 min. late with the wind still building (luckily, it was a sunny, pleasant day to be sitting around in boats telling lies to and about crew and competitors. No complaints were heard about the RC not producing wind on schedule, possibly because the first complainant is joyfully designated the next week’s PRO). Most of the fleet, wary of the shifting winds took the safe route up the middle of the course for the first leg, but Raven went for the right layline (on the apparently un-favored tack) and moved from the back to the front of the pack before rounding the Windward mark.

The procession to the Leeward mark appeared uneventful but after the leaders rounded the wind eased a little and allowed the rest to bunch up and by the time they were were rounding the Windward mark again it was very close quarter sailing. When the fleet returned to the Leeward mark the wind was just about not existent but as they crawled toward the finish a light breeze began to fill in from the South and they close reached for the line.

The law of averages says next week should be a gear-breaker, but who say’s we are average?
