A great ending to a pretty good season.
Before race time the wind was pretty much as forecast: SE 10 – 12. and well established. This allowed the RC to set two separate races (same course) in order to complete six for the series. It also allowed, in comparison with last week’s two lapper, an opportunity to confirm the reasonable belief that two starts give more opportunity for finish position changes than two laps.
It was, again, an all Thunderbird race although Sparkle came out to to entertain the fleet with a large crew in Halloween costumes. She found no PHRF competition.
The course set was SGIF (3¼ nm) which gave fair alignment with the wind at the start of the first race – 150ºM, varying ±10º. IG is ~140º so the left side was favored (and popular). In the vicinity of G wind was about 8 kts at 120º but for the downwind run it recovered to 12 kts at 130º. The wind, as usual soft and variable at I, settled on 11 kts for the beat to the finish. The first two boats finished in about 45 min. the rest were bunched 4 – 6 minutes later.
Race 2 started with the wind at 120º M, 9 – 11 kts. so the left side was favored again. This was largely a repeat of the first race with the additional challenge of a moderating breeze. When the fleet was at G the wind at the CB was 6 – 8 kts at 150º and when they were at I, at the CB it was below 6 and during the beat to the finish it was below 5 kts. This led to some tight tactical sailing and some very close finishes. Most boats finished within 3 minutes and the RC had trouble keeping the times straight (please notify if you spot an error).
The Finish order was radically different for each race as opposed to the one or two place variation in each lap of last week’s comparable two lap race.
This completes PTSA’s 2016 racing season but don’t miss the awards party Nov. 17 th.
In retrospect, this season was better than last in almost all respects. Winds, if sometimes light, were present more regularly and the availability of the committee boat provided the flexibility to respond to unusual conditions and salvage several races. The revival of the much requested distance races was good. The biggest negative was the withering and demise of the PHRF fleet. If this was due to our current race format the RC can make accommodations to win them back.
The RC would like to thank all participants for their good behavior and cooperation throughout the season. Congratulations to those that succeeded and also to those that didn’t quite. This sport is a continuous learning experience for everyone.
